USEP FOSS Club
As a FOSS advocate it is one of my desire to evangelize and preach the benefits of FOSS. This is a bit hard to do, specially because the IT culture here in my uni is bent on using proprietary software. Even the faculty here in uni are very reluctant in adopting FOSS as their platform for instruction.
A challenge as it is, I am still keen on pushing FOSS as an alternative solution. Been using FOSS for quite sometime now and I have found good benefits apart from the cost. As a system administrator before, I have played around various flavors of linux and decided to finally use CENTOS (Mail, Web, Samba, etc.) and IPCOP (as a Firewall). And until now, even if I am no longer the sysad, the servers that I have setup are still running. That’s how stable it is….

With regards to other FOSS applications, I have tried to convince the administration to use OO as our official productivity tools… but I lost the battle of preference. Nevertheless, I still move on and use FOSS and introduce it to my students and colleagues. Little by little, some of my workmates begin to appreciate and use FOSS. Some of them are using it for their respective classes in Programming, DB, etc. Most of them experienced difficulty at first, but when they realized that FOSS can surpass what they have been using before… wheewww!!! they love it man… in fact some of them are pushing for it. Although, I may not be victorious (in a way) in my quest to push for FOSS in my workplace I feel that I have done something to encourage users to try and embrace it.
Next agenda, after introducing the benefits of FOSS and different FOSS applications it came to a point of creating a small group of enthusiastic students who want to know more about FOSS. It was very fortunate for me to be assigned to handle an elective subject, because of that I choose to have FOSS and Open Standards as the core content for this elective. And yes, it’s a good choice because I have the chance to expound salient points about FOSS and Open Standards. And with this opportunity as well, we decided to form the USEP FOSS Club… thanks to all my very enthusiastic students who are also keen on accepting FOSS as an alternative (better) solution other than proprietary ones.
Now, I am happy to announce that we have finally made it… the creation of the USEP FOSS Club.
Next stop, Software Freedom Day which will gonna be held here in the University of Southeastern Philippines.
If you are from USEP we are inviting you to be part of a very vibrant and enthusiastic organiztion:
