Problem with Gutsy
I recently updated my laptop to Ubuntu 7.10. As expected, of course, there were many updates available and the package I believe is streamlined. However, I believe it was not a good choice in my case. Why??? Because it significantly slowed down my laptop. What’s going on??? All the while I thought when I update it will solve most of the problems I encountered in the previous version. As experienced before, I still have problems with audio and video for my Toshiba L25-S119 laptop for a stock install of Ubuntu.
This laptop is a bit old but I found a solution for its audio/video problem in my Ubuntu before (including the wifi problem). I was thinking that these probs will be solved by the update. However, it failed to meet my expectations. I read articles about problems with 7.10 and indeed it’s a pain in the …. to have updated instantly without consulting. Silly me.
Now I am contemplating on going back to 7.04 (Feisty) either K or Gnome or probably i’ll give PCLinuxOS a try. PCLOS is currently number 1 in distrowatch though the numbers are sinking but I guess it’s worth a try.

I am using Gutsy on several desktops (no laptops), and I am very happy with it! Gutsy is my first Ubuntu setup, I moved to it from Mepis Linux ver. 6.5. I like Ubuntu better than Mepis - better look and feel.
I’ve been using Ubuntu since 5.04 (Hoary) in my laptop and almost all installations I had before was OK (though as expected - needs driver support tweak). After all things are setup booting is very quick but with Gutsy it’s not. You need to update again (bugfix I guess) so that booting time will be normal. Not only that, I also experienced bootsplash prob - as if my laptop hangs without anything displayed on screen but after a couple of mins the login window pops up (though I already found a solution for this).
B4 my horrible Gutsy setup I tried PCLOS the setup was OK but the thing is, I don’t like it :). So I moved back to Ubuntu and here I am now with all my guts in 7.10. So far so good.
Thanks Bob.
