With my new HDD & Ubuntu 8.04

Back to FOSS…

I just got my new 160GB HDD for my old but priceless laptop. Immediately after, I installed it and got my Rescue CD from Toshiba to run (something like ghost to replicate everything and start anew). However, because it’s using the ghost replication it created a single participation similar to the old one but this time only 1 partition for the entire disk. That’s bad… after a couple of hours installing/uninstalling the stock software I got tired of looking for pirated installers (which I don’t have in my possession since I shifted to FOSS). So I ended up, installing 8.04 (Ubuntu) in my laptop and the same as my OS before I easily get used to it and it’s very nice and sweet… Lovely…

Nevertheless, I missed my 7.10 because most of the things that I need I already had it in my 7.10. There were many third party applications and addons that I already installed which I expected to be present in 8.04 but to my dismay… it’s not there.

Anyway, this is just my 1st run with 8.04 and I am pretty sure that I will also love this the same as the 7.10 I had before. Many improvements but I have yet to discover almost everything… Will let you know soon.

Cheers…

  1. Ayosa ana sir oie. lingaw unta moshift jud ug linux pero murag di man makaya kay nakaugat na ko sa windows. hehehe.

congrats diay sir. Dean nman diay ka diha sa usep…

  2. :)… well, if you wanna try linux u have to uproot whatever you have with M$ so that you can start exploring the beauty of linux. anyway, it’s worth a try but of course it will be a new environment considering that you will have new tools and new things to consider. But mind you, there are almost (all) equivalent FOSS application to every M$ apps you have. The thing is, most M$ users here in DC that I know are using M$ PIRATED software (because it is very easy to download from p2p or torrent) which is a bit frustrating and annoying because they feel proud using these PIRATED software as if they legally acquired these software from authorized suppliers.

Using a software without trying to spend a penny out of your own pocket is a mere admission that you want a FREE SOFTWARE. But these software that most users use are not for free (at least for most of you that I know). So, why not use FREE AND OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE? At least, you can blatantly say that what you are using is legally acquired and you have the right to use it and maybe distribute it to some extent.

  3. hehehe.. aw hinoon sir tinood jud na. dili pd noon proud nga pirated ha, pero mao mang gd naandan.. metisting man ko sa una sir katong Suse nga distro unya eclipse man cguro to akong php editor, pero mao lage pd murag mangita man jud akong mata ug dreamweaver oie. hehe… kung sabagay matun-an gud tingali pero mogahin napud kag oras ug resources nga sa karon nga kahimtang murag di pa nako makaya.

  4. Yes it’s true. Even I myself would use these tools for convenience and because it’s mostly preferred. The good thing is I am using a licensed version (even it is an old version for my office-desktop) because our sponsor (funding institution) will not allow us to use pirated ones. Nevertheless, I am still using FOSS for my own personal box.

Well, OK lang cguro na if you talk about preference :) and convenience.
