Trying Hard

For a couple of days now, we are trying our best to provide better service to our clients (students). With the depleting budget of the government, we are finding ways to, at least, give it all out to our clients.

We have started this big leap by acquiring new internet subscription (6 Mbps 1:1) to augment the existing internet connection we have. Nevertheless, the students are still complaining… Why? They have observed that the internet connection is still slow… But why? My laptop even though this is outdated performs well and have a good and acceptable internet connection when connected to the network. Why o why?

However, some students noticed something which I believe is a very good observation. They said our laboratory needs some internet accelerators… But we have our dual proxy and load balancing in place, still our clients are complaining… Why? They said the computers need to be updated… Oh yes this is true… But why? They said that these computers are always infected with viruses and the like that’s why it is not performing well. Hmmm, we have exerted so much effort in maintaining its upkeep but still our efforts are short enough to meet their expectations.

Suddenly, I heard some suggestions to use open source particularly Linux OS so that we can probably eliminate viruses and stuff… Then they had head-to-head comparison and indeed they found out that when using Linux OS (Ubuntu) connected to the network it seems that the connection and processing is very acceptable while the other OS is slowly catching up. Probable reason they said, there are malicious (hidden) services that are eating a lot of resources (internet resources that is…) which most users don’t see. Well, probably because some computers here are already infected with tsr malwares, viruses, etc. so expect this to really happen.

Anyway, soon we will be having new computer units here in the lab and we will try to have dual boot OS here so that students can verify and have the option to choose what OS to use when connecting to the network.
