OpenEducation Disc

I had a chance to introduce alternative software applications to school librarians a couple of days ago. During our session I gave them a copy of the Open Education Disc -  which is a collection of very good free (libre) open source software products packaged into a CD. It was a very pleasant experience seeing their reaction with a huge and AHH and OHH. All of them were amazed and in fact shocked (probably because it’s their first time) to see that there’s such a software which is equally useful and more powerful than most proprietary software they are using.

My point is, if in case they will be asked by school administrators on what to do with software licensing issues specially so that most of them are also taking charge of their respective virtual libraries, they have something to suggest and they can give better options in terms of software requirements.

The Open Education Disc is very well packaged that first time users can easily navigate and directly install. The good thing is, most M$ Windoze users will have no headache in installing/using such software because it also runs in Windoze which will give them almost the same click and point experience.

The good thing is they have committed to dissimenate and give it a go in their respective virtual libraries. Wheew!!! Pleasant surprise isn’t it…
