I had my class this morning on computer literacy and a little bit of programming. As I first talked about my experience and a short introduction about myself I wondered if these students really know what they are doing (well, at least, in the context of computers). When they had their first taste of computers majority of them shared that they thought that computers already have a bundled software. Their experience will tell us that they know nothing about software licensing and the need to have a legit copy of it. When they heard that these computer applications should be bought they immediately ask “how much?”. And I began to give them some estimates. The bad thing is… They have discovered that the cost of the computers now is nothing compared to the licensing cost. With that, I also shared to them that there are equivalent, mature and stable software which is FREE… “Oh Yes! Absolutely Free!”. So I started sharing FOSS to them and they immediately got interested. In fact, on our next meeting I will share to them the OpenEducation Disc which I shared to you in my last post.

I had a chance to introduce alternative software applications to school librarians a couple of days ago. During our session I gave them a copy of the Open Education Disc -  which is a collection of very good free (libre) open source software products packaged into a CD. It was a very pleasant experience seeing their reaction with a huge and AHH and OHH. All of them were amazed and in fact shocked (probably because it’s their first time) to see that there’s such a software which is equally useful and more powerful than most proprietary software they are using.

Good day everyone!

I am working on an asterisk project now with ipcop, monowall and pfsense which I am hoping to be successful the soonest possible time. My idea is utilizing all workstationsin our network (specially office computers) as voice terminals to maximize employee productivity and perhaps to minimize cost… One leap at a time I should say… Although I know that similar projects have been succesfull for a couple of years now. I think it’s worth devoting my time (just for now)…

This is interesting and worth the challenge.

What can we do?

We have proposed for an upgrade considering that the number of terminals connected in our network increased rapidly. The scenario was presented to uni admins and they have acknowledged the need to upgrade. But what’s going on? Well, considering that we have limited resources they deferred the plan to upgrade but they said in the very near future it will be done. Well, that’s about it… I hope our clients/students can understand.

We have pumped up our proxy servers to combat the scarcity problem yet its beyond our control (at the very least).

For now, that’s the only thing that we can do. Do you have anything in mind?

For a couple of days now, we are trying our best to provide better service to our clients (students). With the depleting budget of the government, we are finding ways to, at least, give it all out to our clients.

We have started this big leap by acquiring new internet subscription (6 Mbps 1:1) to augment the existing internet connection we have. Nevertheless, the students are still complaining… Why? They have observed that the internet connection is still slow… But why? My laptop even though this is outdated performs well and have a good and acceptable internet connection when connected to the network. Why o why?
